Has the NGC reputation tumbled?

I don't want any mods at me so I will leave the vendor unnamed, but I received an ad from them with the 2007 US Gold Buffalo Bullion coin graded by NGC in an MS 70 as low as $50 over spot. Looking at their website, the price difference between an ungraded Bullion Buff and this NGC MS 70 Buff was only $26 and some change. Their price for a PCGS MS 70 Bullion Buff was $995, or some $262.50 higher than the NGC MS 70.

Is their that much of a difference in the perceived value of a PCGS coin over an NGC coin, or is this just a great deal?

Myself, I went ahead and bought one because it was only $26 more than an ungraded coin, and it was MS 70 at that.

There is only one grader that matters and it ain't NGC.

I have posted about this MANY times.........most dealers place a higher value on PCGS's grading than NGC.

NGC did further damage to themselves when they hurried the gold Buffaloes thru at MS 70 to get the on TV coin shows, and graded (forgive me, I am not going to get the exact numbers) but roughly (if memory serves) 15-20 times MORE than PCGS.

At this stage - I either buy PCGS outright - OR I have been having my NGC coins crossgraded by PCGS....because, when the time comes to sell, PCGS will have the better prices due to their better reputation.

Not all MS 70's are equal!

The nuts are fine but the fruits are drying out in the heat - this summer all your fruits may be dehydrated or fruit-rollups!

Re: Has the NGC reputation tumbled?

So, Lancers points out that NGC didn't have a reputation to tumble to begin with as there is only one grading service worthy of mention, but it shall remain unmentioned.

Master Ho believes the NGC rep has tumbled due to their increasingly relaxed standards to fill the pipeline for TV mass merchandisers. MH also infers that Lancers' unmentioned grader is the better grader.

This then leads to a follow-up question. That is, is there now another coin grading company that has arisen to supplant NGC at # 2?

It used to be that PCGS and NGC were considered the top two. Who would you say are now the top two?

PS. Now that I know NGC is a lousy grader, I can't wait to get my new Buff in so I can throw that sorry sucker away. :shocked_ma:

Land of fruit and nuts? My family has been here since the mid 19th Century. The fruits and nuts all came from back east, the plains states and everything in between. lol.

Maranatha,

P.S. What's the word on ICG?

1. PCGS
2. NGC

The real question is - who is the new number 3?

Some feel its ANACS who has jsut gotten one of PCGS top graders to work for them.

PS - it may not be a real MS 70, only a 69 by PCGS standards - but its still an ounce of gold! And I know you are kidding!

Ya, you are right. I won't toss it. I actually love those Buffalos, and I prefer the bullion to the Proofs, and I still think that paying only $26 more for a graded MS 70 over an ungraded coin is a good deal.
